The
Engineer of the Year Award is presented to an Engineer by the
Society for Professional Engineers for distinguished
contributions to the Engineering Profession and one who has
shown exceptional dedication in furthering the interests of
the profession.

Ir. Dr. Ian
McRae, was SPE's First Engineer of the Year. Dr. McRae,
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Eskom, was awarded The
Engineer of the Year Award at a function held at Meggawatt
Park in Midrand.

Prof. Ir.
HC (Christo) Viljoen, Vice Rector, Stellenbosch University,
received the Engineer of the year award 1992. This
function was held at the Wanderers Club, Illovo,
Johannesburg.

Ir. Dave
Brink, Chief Executive of Sankorp Ltd, Chairman ABSA Bank
and Chairman of Murray and Roberts, received the Engineer
of the Year Award at a ceremony held at the Wanderers
Club, Illovo, Johannesburg.

The Young
Engineer of the Year Award was started in 1994 and the first

The Engineer of the
Year Award for 1995 was held at a Gala Event at the Wanderers
Club, Illovo, Johannesburg on the 9th March 1996. The
Engineer of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Bill Venter,
Chairman Altron Group and Chairman CSIR.

The
Engineer of the Year Award for 1996 is presented to Gary Bell,
Chief Executive Officer, Bell Equipment. Gary Bell
won the award for his lifetime achievement in engineering.
This gala event was held in 1996 for the first time in
conjunction with the World Environment Day Symposium held at
the Volkswagen Conference and Marketing Centre in Midrand on
Wednesday 4 June 1997.

Ir. Rob
Barbour, Chairman and Managing Director of Alusaf Limited, is
awarded the Engineer of the Year Award for 1997 at the World
Environment Day Symposium, held at the VW Conference and
Marketing Centre in Midrand on the 4th June 1998.

Dr. Geoff
Garrett, President and Chief Executive Officer CSIR (Council
for Scientific and Industrial Research), received the Engineer
of the Year Award 1998 at the VW Conference and Marketing
Centre, Midrand on the 3rd June 1999.

Ir.
Bob Pullen, President of the Engineering Council of South
Africa was made an Honorary Fellow of SPE. Ir. John Burdes, President of the South African Society for
Professional Engineers was made a Life Fellow of SPE.
